One day after coming across a marijuana leaf in a cookbook, he sent an email with a photo of it to friends. ![]() ![]() Popek didn't intend to start a blog or write a book. ![]() And he writes an online column for Forbes about the book business and recently published an essay in The Wall Street Journal.īut nothing has been met with as much popularity as a blog he started about interesting artifacts he has come across over the years in the books that come to the family's store - and now the blog has been made into a book published this month called "Forgotten Bookmarks: A Bookseller's Collection of Odd Things Lost Between the Pages," published by Perigee. Popek was a literature major in college - he attended the University at Albany and then transferred to Bennington College in Vermont - so he knows how to write. His parents own Popek's Used and Rare Books on Chestnut Street in Oneonta, and by his own account, he will look through 20,000 books a month that have been brought to the store's warehouse after being bought at auctions and estate sales.
