Basically, this book tells the story of three generations of women: Ava’s grandmother: Emilienne, Ava’s mother: Viviane and then Ava. Ok, so the blurb makes this book sound as if it’s all about Ava Lavender and her quest for love… No. That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava’s quest and her family’s saga build to a devastating crescendo. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the Summer Solstice celebration. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naïve to the twisted motives of others. Ava-in all other ways a normal girl-is born with the wings of a bird. Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga.įoolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. The concept sounded very interesting, but I think what wasn’t cool, was that the blurb was just misleading… I have seen this book splashed across the book community with nearly everyone saying how amazing it is and that it’s one of their all-time favourite books.
